Stay In the Right Lane, Literally – Mountain Driving Tips for Any Season

Being a cautious driver is important, especially while driving on Colorado mountain roads. Here is a list of tips that will help you safely navigate Colorado’s mountain roads for every season.

  1. Slow drivers should stay in the right lane. Drivers should remain in the rightmost lane unless they are passing. Slower drivers should always move to the right lane, allowing faster drivers to pass. This also helps prevent traffic backup.
  2. Pull over to let the “conga line” pass. If you are driving at a slow speed on a one lane road and notice a long line of cars behind you, safely pull over to the side of the road to allow the other drivers to pass you.
  3. Don’t tailgate. The mountain roads are already risky to navigate, and tailgating makes the roads even more dangerous.
  4. Follow the traction laws. Not following traction laws can put those around you on the road at risk. Not following them can also result in fines, up to $650.
  5. Don’t disrupt traffic to take a picture. Do not drive slowly, swerve, or stop in the middle of the road to take a photo. This is very dangerous and annoying to other drivers. Pull off the road in a safe place to take a photo.
  6. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. It is important to manage your speed and stay aware of animals, as they often roam along the roads. It is better to drive slow and arrive late than potentially harm Colorado’s wildlife or injure yourself.
  7. Know your brakes, especially in winter weather. Make sure your vehicle is in working order before taking it on the mountain roads. It is possible that you may need a driving break due to hot brakes.
  8. It’s okay to drive slowly, just do so responsibly. Some drivers need to drive slow to feel comfortable. Just be aware of how slow you are driving and how it is impacting the traffic around you.
