Colorado has long been regarded as the epicenter of winter sports, particularly skiing and snowboarding. Even though Colorado ski resorts clearly define and mark their “Slow Zones” with large yellow signs on the mountain, and in yellow on their trail maps, these areas are seeing an increase in high-speed collisions that have resulted in significant, severe, and permanent injuries.
Claiming that Whistler Blackcomb ski area in British Columbia, has experienced a decline in the number of safety staff enforcing skier speed rules since Vail Resorts purchased the ski area, Dr. Christina Williams launched a petition to improve and enforce safety measure, and to compel skiers on crowded beginner runs to slow down. According to Dr. Williams, Whistler’s Emergency Department has seen a significant increase in collision cases over the past few years due to the lack of personnel and the lack of rule enforcement. Dr. Williams petitioned the resort to add more safety staff who strictly enforce the Skier Responsibility Code. Dr. Williams also proposed speed traps and suggested that Vail Resorts consider publishing accident data. These are some of the same safety measures that the law firm of Bloch Ongert, LLC, has proposed to the Colorado General Assembly.
Since its launch, the petition has amassed more than 1,500 signatures, and Whistler Blackcomb locals, as well as other commenters, have weighed in with descriptions of the injuries they suffered because of their involvement in collisions.
