Colorado mountain passes tend to feature narrow lanes and sharp switchbacks, and as a result, the risks associated with hugging the centerline drastically increase. This is especially true when navigating blind spots. Because hugging the centerline may result in fatal head-on collisions or sideswipe collisions, one of the best practices is to create and maintain a buffer zone between your vehicle and the centerline.
On July 31, 2026, a red Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling southbound on a mountain pass south of Silverton, Colorado. Not only was the driver straddling the centerline, but he was also partially in the northbound lane. At the same time, a black Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling northbound, and that driver was also on the centerline. When the two motorcycles passed each other, they collided, and the black Harley went off the road, became airborne, and struck a ridge, ejecting the driver before continuing to roll down the ridge. Meanwhile, the red Harley rolled onto its side and slid before coming to rest on the northbound shoulder. Tragically, the driver of the black Harley was pronounced dead at the scene, and the red Harley’s driver was transported to a hospital with severe injuries.
This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the importance of driving in a cautious and prudent manner, especially when navigating Colorado’s winding mountain road.
