Tips for Exploring the Backcountry

Now that we’re well into hiking and outdoor recreation season, Colorado’s most prominent peaks are receiving heavy foot traffic. Exploring Colorado’s majestic and scenic backcountry is a rewarding experience, but safety must be prioritized. Here are some tips and things to remember to enhance your safety and preparedness in the backcountry:

  1. Before you set out, inform another individual, such as a friend or family member, of your planed route, destination, and expected return time.
  2. Hiking or biking in groups, or at least with one other person, is always ideal.
  3. Maintain situational awareness by being present and alert. Be cognizant of traffic, wildlife, weather changes, and other risks.
  4. Pack pepper spray or bear spray.
  5. Research local crime reports and stay up-to-date. Vehicular break-ins tend to make news cycles. Always lock your unattended vehicle and store valuables out of sight.
  6. Familiarize yourself with your route prior to taking a trail. Ensure you have a reliable navigation system.
  7. Ensure you have a stable internet connection in the backcountry. Relying on cellular connection isn’t always an option. Instead, consider using a GPS-enabled communication device.
