It is imperative to observe safety precautions and familiarize oneself with city and state laws prior to mounting the saddle of a conventional bicycle or e-bike. Below is a list of basic safety precautions and tips, as outlined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, that have provided more opportunities to elevate and safeguard the cycling experience.

  1. Equip yourself properly. Before each ride, perform a visual check of your bike. Ensure that your tires are properly inflated, brakes are working, chain is clean and lubed, and nothing is loose or rattling.
  2. Increase your visibility by wearing bright, high-visibility colors and reflective clothing. You can also attach reflectors and blinking lights to your bike.
  3. Always wear a helmet, preferably one with a multidirectional impact protection system (MIPS), even if the law does not require it.
  4. Be actively aware of your surroundings. Keep your ear to the ground and allow your senses to be attuned to traffic and road conditions.
  5. Since bicycle laws are jurisdiction based, acquaint yourself with and adhere to your city’s and state’s driving laws. Ride with the flow of traffic, obey all street signs, signals, and road markings, and ride your bike defensively. The League of American Bicyclists provides a directory of bicycle laws, rules, and regulations and organizes them by state.
