Avon Adds Speed Cameras

The Avon Town Council approved the use of an automated ticketing system for speeding vehicles in busy areas of town. The cameras, which will issue tickets in the amount of $40 for speeding, are an additional step toward improving pedestrian safety. Avon is currently in the middle of a $6 million project to install lighted pedestrian crossings and landscape medians in multiple locations along U.S. Highway 6. There have been a number of vehicle-pedestrian collisions in various locations in Avon, so the town is taking measures to increase pedestrian safety.

Avon Road saw 74 accidents, 167 citations, and 874 warnings between 2020 and 2024, according to Avon Police Department data. A speed study from July 29 through August 4, in those areas showed that on Avon Road, which has a speed limit of 25 miles per hour, 11% of total vehicles exceeded 35 miles per hour. The Town of Avon hopes that implementing the speeding cameras will reduce the number of accidents and increase safety for drivers and pedestrians.
