Snowboarder Partially Buried in East Vail Avalanche

A snowboarder was caught, carried and partially buried in an avalanche on January 9, 2026, in East Vail. The snowboarder was pinned against a tree and unable to self-extricate. Fortunately, the snowboarder’s partner skinned up to the burial location to assist. The snowboarder suffered only minor injuries.

An Instagram post from the Friends of Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) stated, “the much needed new snow is very exciting, and while there are many places you can travel safely, you need to be aware of where you could trigger an avalanche that could injure you or worse. In the places with a deeper snowpack, you can trigger the largest avalanches. In other places, the avalanches you might trigger will be smaller but still potentially dangerous in consequential terrain.”

The CAIC reports moderate to considerable avalanche danger across many Colorado mountain ranges, including parts of the San Jean, Park Range, Elk and West Elk mountains. These mountains currently have considerable avalanche danger, meaning human-triggered avalanches are more likely.
