Maximum Daily Ski/Snowboarder Capacity at Various Ski Areas in Colorado

As we covered in our last blog on 12/8/23, a Utah District Court judge ordered Vail Resorts to produce the math behind its CCC formula following a dispute about additional development at the Park Hill Ski Area. CCC, or Comfortable Carrying Capacity, is a measure of the amount a guests a resort can handle while still providing its best consumer experience, and is a key component of ski area planning and development.

We still do not know the exact math behind Vail Resort’s formulation of CCC, as the case is being appealed. However, the Colorado Sun was able find the CCC number of many of the nation’s top ski areas through reviewing documents from the National Forest Service. The maximum capacity for some of Colorado’s biggest areas are as follows:

  • Arapahoe Basin: 4,120
  • Aspen Mountain: 4,610
  • Beaver Creek: 18,650
  • Breckenridge: 20,190
  • Copper Mountain: 15,630
  • Snowmass: 14,820
  • Steamboat: 16,310
  • Vail: 23,160
  • Winter Park: 15,190

Interestingly, Vail Resorts has an agreement with the Forest Service and the Town of Vail to begin limiting capacity when the Vail Ski Area reaches more than 19,900 visitors in a single day. According to Vail, however, this has not occurred in several years.
