8 Tips for Spring Skiing in Colorado

Spring skiing is almost here! These are some tips to keep in mind to help you enjoy the warmer weather skiing in Colorado:

  1. Avoid Icy Mornings and Slushy Afternoons
Prime skiing is between 10am and 2pm. This allows the sun to soften up the icy snow before snow turns into slush on the mountain. This time frame also allows skiers to miss some mountain traffic while skiers are off eating lunch.
  2. Choose the Right Terrain
Start your day on east/south facing runs that are sunny and groomed and continue to north-facing runs as the day continues.
  3. Wear Layers
Colorado weather is notoriously unpredictable. Be sure to layer-up to be prepared for cold mornings, warm afternoons, and unforeseen weather conditions.
  4. Make Sure your Gear is in Good Condition
Get your skis waxed for wetter conditions to prevent sticking on springtime snow. It will also make for a better and faster ride through the slushy snow.
  5. Watch Out for Hazards
As the snowpack melts, more hazards and debris will pop up so be careful of rocks, roots, and tree stumps, as well as other unexpected hazards.
  6. Wear Sunscreen and Goggles
The UV rays are powerful at high elevation, so it is important to protect your skin and eyes from the sun even when tempting spring sunshine is out.
  7. Don’t Skip Quirky Spring Events and Apres-Ski Activities
Colorado resorts hold a variety of fun events to celebrate spring ski season, from deck parties to sled races and pond skimming.
  8. Use your “Rock Skis”
If you have multiple pairs of skis, it may be wise to ski on the older ones to avoid damaging your skis that are in better condition.
