- Training. It is important that you be well-trained to operate a snowmobile in the backcountry and that you know the area well. There is no substitute for training and experience. There are backcountry snowmobile classes you can take to increase your knowledge and safety skills.
- Take the essentials. It is important to dress in plenty of warm clothing so you remain warm if an emergency occurs and you need to be rescued. Tools such as a GPS and compass are also vital, especially when visibility becomes poor. You should also take food and water, as well as a communication device.
If something happens in the backcountry and you need rescue, know that it takes time. A few things you can do to help rescuers find you are giving 911 dispatchers your coordinates and staying put, making a shelter, and building an access road for rescuers if you are able. Lastly, consider investing in a two-way satellite communications device.
