Skiing and snowboarding are one of the perks of living in or visiting Colorado. Unfortunately, injuries happen on the mountain all the time, and a close call of a serious injury will ruin your beautiful mountain day. Here are 14 things people do at Colorado ski resorts that we all could do without:
- The human traffic cone. The parking lots are often limited. Don’t stand in a parking spot waiting for your friends to arrive. Respect the parking lot rules that “the early bird gets the worm.”
- The distracted lift-rider. Pay attention to the lift line in front of you to continue the flow of lift traffic. Get off your phone prior to loading!
- Mr. Free Concert. Don’t play your music out loud. Headphones and earbuds exist for a reason so please use them.
- The surprise lift bar user. When you put the chair lift bar down, which is recommended for safety, let the other lift riders know ahead of time so they are prepared and can adjust accordingly.
- The lift bar naysayer. If one rider requests the safety bar to be utilized do not argue or say no.
- The need for speed. Going at unreasonable speeds puts people around you at risk. Be respectful and responsible if you are going to speed up.
- The mid-run break. Taking a break in the middle of a run poses a safety hazard. Take a break if you need it, but make sure you are out of the way and clearly visible to the people upslope.
- Lift line blockers. Do not stop or block the entrance of lift lines. While waiting for friends or family get out of the way!
- Lift talkers. Be respectful of the other lift riders. Keep the conversation appropriate and read the room if they do not want to chat.
- The litter bug. Never litter. Put trash in your pocket or a backpack until you reach one of the many trash cans around the ski resort.
- The gear swinger. Make sure you are aware of your skis or board while on the lift. The people sitting next to you do not want to be whacked.
- The slope sprayer. Spraying your friends with snow is fun but make sure bystanders don’t get caught in your spray. Strangers will not appreciate that. If you are sprayed by someone that fell, check and make sure they are alright.
- The human gate. Most slopes are wide open. Please provide a wide path for others if you stop on a run and make sure you are out of the way.
- The beginner trickster. Performing tricks on the slopes is fun but do so with extreme caution. Make sure to only do tricks in designated areas of the mountain, like the terrain park.
- The “slopes are alright today” guy. Avoid negative talk about ski resorts. It is unnecessary and just enjoy the day even if the weather isn’t perfect.
- The “expert.” You don’t have to tell people you are the best skier on the mountain for you to be the best skier on the mountain.
- The wanna-be influencer. Don’t let videotaping while skiing result in you running into someone. Be respectful of the people around you and maybe refrain from videotaping for the safety of your fellow skiers.
