13-Year-Old Tragically Dies Falling from Canadian Chair lift

On February 11, a 13-year-old girl tragically passed away after falling from a chair lift at Centre Vorlage in Canada. It is reported that the girl’s hoodie became tangled in the chair lift pull device, which suffocated her. The Centre Vorlage ski area, located approximately 18 miles northwest of Ottawa, closed for nearly a week following this tragedy.

Though chair lift related deaths are rare, this incident highlights the importance of being aware of your surroundings and your gear when loading or unloading from a chair lift. Loose clothing, or gear with dangling straps, can create “snag” risks and become dangerous.

The ski injury attorneys at Bloch Ongert have experience litigating chair lift injury cases. Recent changes to the law in Colorado can allow injured skiers to circumvent the ski areas’ liability waivers when the ski area violates a safety statute, resulting in a chair lift injury. If you’ve been injured on a chair lift, call Bloch Ongert today at (970) 926-1700 to speak directly to an attorney.
